Parts of the TMJ

 

Articular Disc

•            Oval plate of fibrocartilage; consists of collagen fibers and cartilage cells

•            Divides the TMJ into an superior and inferior synovial cavity

 

Superior compartment

•            Allows translational movement

 

Lower compartment

•            Allows rotational movement

 

Retrodiscal tissue

•            Loose connective tissue attached to the posterior part of the articular disc and is vascularized and highly innervated.
